Itinerary
Paro - Thimphu - Punakha - Thimphu - Paro
Arrive at Paro International Airport and journey to Bhutan's capital, Thimphu. Visit Memorial Chorten, a prominent stupa dedicated to Bhutan's third king, the Takin Preservation Centre to see Bhutan's endangered national animal, then enjoy panoramic views of the Thimphu Valley from Sangaygang Viewpoint. Sightsee Tashichho Dzong, a grand fortress that houses Bhutan's government offices and Bhutan's Buddhist monks before ending the day with a welcome dinner featuring traditional Bhutanese cuisine.
Begin the day with a visit to Buddha Dordenma, a towering statue overlooking Thimphu Valley, before continuing over the scenic Dochula Pass, where 108 chortens crown the mountain ridge and offer spectacular views of the Himalayan range. Continue to Punakha, Bhutan's former capital, and enjoy a gentle walk through artistic Sopsokha Village, past rice terraces and mustard fields, to reach the sacred Chimi Lhakhang Fertility Temple.
Embrace the simple rhythms of rural life in Punakha by joining your hosts in daily farm activities, from milking cows and tending to seasonal paddy fields to learning how to cook a traditional Bhutanese meal. Then try your hand at Bhutan's national sport, archery. Visit the majestic Punakha Dzong, Bhutan's former seat of government, a riverside fortress at the confluence of the Pho and Mo Chhu rivers, and cross the longest suspension bridge in Bhutan, Punakha Suspension Bridge, before returning to Thimphu.
Visit Choki Traditional Art School, local textile museum and paper factory to draw inspiration for your next activity. Take part in a hands-on workshop of your choice, guided by a local artist. Choose from mineral pigment art, clay sculpture, or traditional motif painting, and take your creation home as a meaningful souvenir from Bhutan. Afterwards, explore the vibrant Centenary Farmers Market, where locals gather to trade fresh produce and regional specialties.
Travel from Thimphu to Paro, stopping along the way at the Tachog Lhakhang Iron Suspension Bridge, then visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan's oldest temples. Continue to Rinpung Dzong, Paro's iconic riverside fortress, and nearby Ta Dzong, a former watchtower now home to the National Museum, to learn more about Bhutan's history and culture. Enjoy a relaxed afternoon wandering Paro's charming streets, lined with arts and crafts shops and cozy cafés, easing into a slower pace ahead of tomorrow's Tiger's Nest hike.
Start your day early with a hike to Paro Taktsang (Tiger's Nest Monastery), a sacred Buddhist monastery nestled high on a cliff at 3,120 m above the Paro Valley, renowned for its breathtaking views and spiritual significance. After descending, relax in an optional traditional hot stone bath — the perfect way to soothe your body and mind and reflect on your journey through Bhutan.
Depart from Paro Airport, carrying with you cherished memories of Bhutan's culture, landscapes, and the spirit of the Himalayas.
