Itinerary
Paro - Thimphu - Punakha - Paro
Arrive at Paro International Airport and journey to Bhutan's capital, Thimphu. Visit Memorial Chorten, a prominent stupa dedicated to Bhutan's third king, the Takin Preservation Centre to see Bhutan's endangered national animal, then enjoy panoramic views of the Thimphu Valley from Sangaygang Viewpoint. Sightsee Tashichho Dzong, a grand fortress that houses Bhutan's government offices and Bhutan's Buddhist monks before ending the day with a welcome dinner featuring traditional Bhutanese cuisine.
Begin the day with a short drive to Buddha Dordenma, a towering statue overlooking Thimphu Valley, before cycling over the scenic Dochula Pass (21 km), where 108 chortens crown the mountain ridge and offer spectacular views of the Himalayan range. Continue downhill to Punakha, Bhutan's former capital, and enjoy a short ride through artistic Sopsokha Village (39 km), past rice terraces and mustard fields, to reach the sacred Chimi Lhakhang Fertility Temple (1 km) then to the homestay (14 km).
Embrace the simple rhythms of rural life in Punakha at the homestay by learning how to cook a traditional Bhutanese meal and try your hand at Bhutan's national sport, archery. Then, embark on a serene ride to and across the Punakha Suspension Bridge (3 km), the longest suspension bridge in Bhutan, and continue to the majestic Punakha Dzong (1 km), Bhutan's former seat of government, a riverside fortress at the confluence of the Pho and Mo Chhu rivers, before returning to Paro by car.
Cycle from Paro to conquer Chele La Pass (42 km), Bhutan's highest motorable pass, where the journey climbs to soaring heights — prayer flags strung across the ridge, alpine forests below, and, on clear days, the striking peak of Jomolhari commanding the skyline — before an exhilarating ride back down (42 km) to the hotel in Paro.
Set off on an easy ride to Kyichu Lhakhang (4 km), one of Bhutan's oldest temples, then continue to Rinpung Dzong (7 km), Paro's iconic riverside fortress, and nearby Ta Dzong (2 km), a former watchtower now home to the National Museum, to discover Bhutan's history and culture. Wind down with a gentle ride through Paro's charming streets (3 km), lined with arts and crafts shops and cozy cafés, easing into a slower pace before returning to the hotel (2 km).
Start your day early with a hike to Paro Taktsang (Tiger's Nest Monastery), a sacred Buddhist monastery nestled high on a cliff at 3,120 m above the Paro Valley, renowned for its breathtaking views and spiritual significance. After descending, relax in an optional traditional hot stone bath — the perfect way to soothe your body and mind and reflect on your journey through Bhutan.
Depart from Paro Airport, carrying with you cherished memories of Bhutan's culture, landscapes, and the spirit of the Himalayas.
