Itinerary
Paro - Thimphu - Punakha - Paro
Arrive at Paro International Airport and journey onward to Thimphu, Bhutan's capital, taking the day to relax and acclimatize to the altitude. Visit the National Memorial Chorten, a revered stupa built in honour of the Third King, then head to the Takin Preservation Centre to meet Bhutan's unusual national animal. Enjoy panoramic views from Sangaygang Viewpoint before a relaxed stroll through Thimphu town and a welcome dinner featuring traditional Bhutanese cuisine.
Begin the day at Buddha Dordenma, a towering statue overlooking Thimphu Valley, and sightsee Tashichho Dzong, a grand fortress that houses Bhutan's government offices and Buddhist monks. In the afternoon, visit Choki Traditional Art School to draw inspiration from Bhutan's centuries-old crafts before taking part in a hands-on workshop guided by a local artist. Choose from mineral pigment art, clay sculpture, or traditional motif painting, and take your creation home as a meaningful souvenir. Continue to the vibrant Centenary Farmers Market, where locals gather to trade fresh produce and regional specialties.
Travel from Thimphu to Punakha over the scenic Dochula Pass, where 108 chortens crown the mountain ridge and offer spectacular views of the Himalayan range. Continue to Punakha, Bhutan's former capital, and reach the sacred Chimi Lhakhang Fertility Temple, tucked among rice terraces and mustard fields. In the afternoon, explore the majestic Punakha Dzong, Bhutan's former seat of government, a riverside fortress at the confluence of the Pho and Mo Chhu rivers.
Drive back to Paro, a serene valley steeped in history and spirituality. Visit Rinpung Dzong, Paro's iconic riverside fortress, and nearby Ta Dzong, a former watchtower now home to the National Museum, to learn more about Bhutan's history and culture. Wind down early to prepare for tomorrow's ascent.
Begin early with a transfer to Sang Choekor Buddhist College, where pack ponies join the journey ahead. The trail climbs steadily through shaded ridge lines and prayer-flag-lined clearings, passing Chhoe Chhoe Tse Lhakhang, a mountainside temple, before continuing through old-growth forest to a wide meadow scattered with sacred chortens. Spend the night camping at Bumdra Monastery (3,800m), known as the Cave of a Thousand Prayers, with sweeping views across the Himalayan range.
Descend from Bumdra through ancient pine and rhododendron forest, following the monks' winding trail toward the valley below. The path leads through the gardens of Sangtopelri, offering a dramatic first glimpse of Taktsang Monastery (Tiger's Nest) clinging to the cliffside far below. After a steep descent past a waterfall and a final climb of stone steps, arrive at this legendary monastery, built around the caves where Guru Padmasambhava meditated, before returning to Paro for a well-earned rest and farewell dinner.
Depart from Paro Airport, carrying with you the memory of ridge lines, prayer flags, and the sacred stillness of Bhutan's high country.
